Tasmania Car Hire
Tasmania is a small off-coast Australian State with a population of roughly 500,000 people. “Tassie” still lends roughly 37% of it’s land mass to national reserves, parks and heritage sites making it an extremely stripped back and relaxing clutter-free holiday destination. Tasmania is also home to the now extinct Tasmanian Devil which is also the State’s national animal.

Many say the only way to truly see Tasmania is to hire a 4x4 from a specialty car rental company and head off the asphalt to explore the reserves and beaches. Only some car rental companies allow their cars off road so make sure you check you have both a vehicle that is appropriate and that you are covered by insurance before doing so!
There are two main ways to get to Tasmania, you can either fly into one of several airports on the island or travel to Melbourne and get on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry. This ferry is also equipped to take vehicles across the water to Tasmania, so you can take care of your car rental in Melbourne if need be!

Though the island is small, a GPS system is a highly recommended device to hire from your chosen car rental company – also remember to compensate your estimated travel times for the fact that with the high speed winds in Tasmania in can be difficult to reach to 100km/ph speed limit at times. There is a large amount of wildlife that wanders onto the roads in Tasmania as well – so keep your eyes peeled!
Remember to check for changes in local driving laws and have your international license prepared when you pick up your rental.
